Need Tips and Tricks Combining Photos With Text

Post by satchman »

Hello,

While I am amazed that it is so much easier to format text with graphics in Textmaker compared to Word, I still have trouble getting the text to appear at the top of the page and the graphics to appear below the text. What usually happens is that the photo will be at the top of the page and the text that I want above the photo will be below the photo.

I still have had trouble with this even with working in Word for many years. Specifically, what I do is I create greeting cards for people by finding an online photo that represents the event. (i.e Birthday, Christmas, Graduation, Sympathy) The process is the following:

1.) I do an image search for the event and will often add a phrase for specifics.

2.) I will download the file to my downloads folder.

3.) I will use Irfanview (A fantastic and free photo editor and viewer) to resize the photo to a medium or large size. I keep the proportions in check and the first dimensions are anywhere from like 600-800 pixels.

4.) I write a title or greeting in Textmaker (or Word in the past.) I'll have the title on the page, and position the text to Center and than I click below the title to say, "OK, put my picture below the title text." But the software always puts the picture centered and the title text below the picture when I want the title text above the picture.

5.) Look at the screenshot that I have added. How do I go about adding a Title to the top of the page? What is preventing me from doing this currently? This is just one example of the many problems I have often combining photos with text. Word had some little dog icon and it allowed for ways to position text. What is the equivalent of that in Textmaker?

I will leave this topic open for other inquires or tips regarding combining text with photos, because I know that this can be a challenge for even advanced word processing users. I have made a copy of the file in question, which I am sharing now.

First of all, go to Tools > Options, tab "General", and set "Insert frames and drawings immediately" to "Auto". If this doesn’t help, set it to „Never“.
If this doesn’t solve your problem, please note that TextMaker has to different ways of inserting images: either as an object frame or as an embedded object. You can always change between these two modes by right-clicking the image and selecting "Convert to object frame/embedded object" from the context menu. An embedded object is part of the text and treated by the program as a sort of oversized letter. An object frame is a separate object; it is placed on a different level and its interaction with the text can be defined in many ways. For example, when you want to insert text above the image in your sample file and this image is an embedded object, the only way to do this is to set the cursor at the beginning of the document and insert text there. If the image is an object frame and you select it with the mouse, you may drag it freely to a different position (or move it with the arrow keys).
To find out what you can do with object frames and embedded objects (and what you can’t do) right-click the image and choose "Picture: properties" in the context menu. You will see in the "Layout" tab that you can do practically nothing with an embedded object (just as you cannot move a single letter in the text around, except by copy & paste) whereas an object frame gives you all kinds of options.
