NEW USER with a question about footnotes

I am an author trying to use TextMaker to create a PDF file for my book. I am currently using the free version of TextMaker. I use footnotes in the book to add information that is not part of the story. I have looked for help about adding footnotes and now believe that I must purchase the SoftMaker Office suite to be able to use footnotes.
If this is not true, please tell me how to use footnotes in the free version.
