Icons Too Small in Right-Click Formatting

Post by ITFlip »

  • When you highlight text and right-click to bring up formatting options, the icons for Pasting options are too small. They are smaller than other icons in the right-click formatting options like Bold, Underline etc. Increasing the size if the Pasting icons to be as large as the other icons would be more consistent as well as easier to see and select. In Touch Mode, the Pasting icons are larger, but still a little too small.
  • In Touch Mode, in the right-click formatting options, the B icon for Bold is on the previous line (that is: not on the same line as Italicize and Underline). In non-Touch Mode, the B is on the same line as Italicize and Underline.

Respectfully, I don't find them to be too small. I think they are about right. If they were to be made much larger, IMHO they would be too large.

What sort of platform are you working on? I am on a Windows 10 desktop computer, using a 27-inch monitor with the resolution set for 2560 x 1440. On a smaller monitor with appropriately lower resolution, the icons would actually be larger (visually).

I agree. My monitor has the same dimensions and for me, the icons have a decent size. But I use the Touch mode UI; without that, all icons are too small for me.

I had to check. Touch mode is activated on my system, too. What's interesting is that I did NOT set it when I installed the 2026 Beta. I must have activated it in SoftMaker Office 2024 and the beta cloned the setting when I installed it.

Overview

Individuals will have different preferences for the size of interface elements. If an icon is a little too big, it's still usable; if it's too small, it might not be usable. Every other element in the right-click is appropriately sized in non-Touch Mode, but the size of the paste icons in Touch Mode is a more appropriate size for non-Touch Mode. The word “Paste” appears above the icons, but it is not clickable.

Of the Applications I’ve Reviewed, in non-Touch Mode, TextMaker has the Smallest Icons.

When right-clicking in a document, the pop-ups in the applications below have icons and/or text for pasting that present a larger clickable area:
  • Collabora Office (Windows & Linux): although the paste icon is slightly smaller, the words “Paste” and “Paste Special” are larger and make the options more readable; they also make a larger target for clicking.
  • LibreOffice Writer (Linux): although the paste icon is slightly smaller, the words “Paste” and “Paste Special” make the options more readable; they also make a larger target for clicking.
  • MobiSystems MobiDocs (Windows): larger clickable icons plus words “Paste” and “Paste Options” are larger and clickable.
  • MS Word (Windows): larger paste icons that are also spaced out more.
  • OnlyOffice (Windows & Linux): larger icon plus the clickable word “Paste”
  • SoftMaker FlexiPDF (Windows): Paste icon is just a little bit larger plus has the clickable word “Paste” next to the icon (the whole row is clickable).
On a related note, a nice feature in TextMaker is that if you hover your cursor over each icon, a helpful pop-up label appears in decently sized text; however, the label appears underneath the cursor, which partially obscures the label. It would be helpful if the pop-up label were in a slightly different position such that the label is not blocked by the cursor.

Summary

With the tiny icons and partially obscured pop-up labels, I find the Print icons in the right-click pop-up to be annoyingly unusable - even when scaling my Windows display scaled to 125%. If I want to paste something, I choose an option from the Ribbon or from the Menu. I find the same results using the Windows and Linux versions of TextMaker NX 2026 Beta. I do use the other options available in the right-click.
__________

Test Parameters

Tested at screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 with 100% and 125% display scaling
Tested at screen resolution of 1366 x 768 at 100% and 125% display scaling.
Tested in at the above resolutions in Touch Mode and in non-Touch Mode.
Tested on Windows and on Linux.

True.

It's even worse if you have the mouse cursor set for a larger arrow (or whatever icon you use) than the Windows standard. On my system, the prompts disappear almost completely behind the arrow.
