Language tool

Post by lgsl »

I enabled LanguageTool however, I couldn't make it check for grammar on Spanish. I took a paragraph and removed all punctuation and it did nothing.

It would be also nice if one could configure TM so it could use a custom LanguageTool server, self-hosted, for instance. It shouldn't be too hard to implement, just allow us to set the URL, just as LibreOffice is able to, this would be a welcoming enhancement over this feature.

1. Grammar checking works on those paragraphs in which the cursor is not in. Move the caret out of the paragraph.

2. What would be the point? We will provide the commercial version, whereas you would only have the limited open-source version.

1. Did so, still does not work.

2. The point would be to be able to run it offline. Not to depend on SoftMaker's instance and/or an internet connection.

1. To help us investigate, please share the file where you're encountering the problem, along with a screenshot that clearly shows the issue.

2. Thank you for your valuable suggestion. This feature is currently in its initial release, and while we appreciate the feedback, this level of customization is not on our near-term roadmap.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Go to options => Language and enable Language Tool as grammar checker
2. Open the attached document (I added comments to show you where grammar mistakes are, and what it should be the correct way. Please notice that most of the punctuation mistakes are not detected by my own local instance of Language Tool, however other mistakes, like repetitions, wrong uses of singular and plurals and so on should.)

As additional information: I am using openSUSE Tumbleweed 20251018.

Additional notes: Note that the comment issue has not been yet fully resolved as of beta 3. The issue can be reproduced with any document. This is just an example for you. I have not tried to reproduce this issue in a language that is not Spanish. There are two reasons for it: 1. Spanish has a more complex grammar that makes it easier to test LT, and happens to be my native language so I can check false positives with ease, 2. I have plenty of sample files to try this feature with and compare with my local instance of LT and LibreOffice to make use it is working all right.

==

I understand this is a beta and not a final release, hence why suggest it wright away. Allowing users to use their own instance, if so they wish, would add value to TM, specially if the full pro version of LanguageTool will be provided just for the NX version. I do not think it requires much to let users provide a url to their instance in asimilar fashion as LibreOffice allows it.

As of Beta4 the issue is still present, despite the improvement made to this feature according the changelog.

Seems like part of the issue was on the server side because I just notice it works, however it makes TM quire sluggish and selecting words by double click does not work.

The selecting issue can be reproduced by double clicking any word that is marked as a spell mistake. After you do so, it will stop working and the document might become slow to edit.

Update: Closing and opening the document again fixes the issue.

Given that, and I quote «Grammar checking via LanguageTool now uses the LanguageTool servers.» in beta8. I, once again, request that the ability to configure TM to use our own instance of LanguageTool. Why? Privacy. Some of us don't want our data going to a 3rd party. Also this is a feature available in LibreOffice and OnlyOffice. Why not add it? You already made all the hard work implementing the system all that is left is the ability to let the user appoint the service to their own URL.
