Feature suggestion for NX and 2026

Post by Kurt Lang »

The fonts menu is in a sore need of a redesign. Yes, I realize you're trying to mimic the layout of the MS Office ribbon, but it's a poor way to display font lists and choose them.

Worse, it allows you to choose fonts that don't exist. Such as American Typewriter. There is no italic version of that font. And yet, if you click the I button on the ribbon, the SoftMaker apps slant the text. Maybe MS Word does the same thing. I haven't used that in a long time now and don't recall if it does that. But the user simply shouldn't be able to choose something that does not exist. Some printers and/or printer drivers will balk at such imagined data. The page may not print, or the font will be substituted with something that does exist. Print shops in particular hate it when you send them files where font effects are attributes only, and there is no real font to go with it.

The way fonts are listed is also a mess. Helvetica as an example in these apps.

Even here, you don't even see everything that's available. You have to click on the attribute buttons, not knowing if what they do displays a real font or a faked attribute.

This approach as opposed to the Adobe apps. No mistake in the Adobe apps what you can choose since what you see are only fonts that exist. Only two major headings, Helvetica and Helvetica Neue, with all available fonts listed within. No need at all for attribute buttons, other than an underline.

Yes, you can still make the same attributes mistake in the Adobe apps in the Character palette, but at least you can't directly choose imaginary fonts.
