Review of 6 new features

Post by Tcaws »

I've taken a look at the list of new features here https://www.softmaker.com/en/products/s ... ffice-beta to check them out. Hopefully feedback on 6 of them might be helpful.

System file dialogue

This is an improvement. I didn't actually notice it at first, because system file dialogue opens exactly when you'd expect it to, and you have to remember that it didn't used to. My system file dialogue (kubuntu) is better than SoftMaker's own in some ways, e.g. crumbs in the titlebar. But worse in others, e.g. no image preview. But overall, SoftMaker using its own meant you had to set up Quick Paths separately, whereas with your own file dialogue you will already have set up your favourites.

Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+Shift+V

I was expecting this to be an improvement. Ctrl+Alt+V then scroll down menu to 'unformatted text' was a slow way to achieve a very common action. However, it doesn't actually seem to be working in Linux?

Context menu with integrated toolbar

Nifty feature, especially for those who, unlike me, prefer ribbons to menus, but anyway it pops up both. For those of us who generally use the mouse, the ribbon is nearer than the top of the page, so slightly quicker to use.

Quite apart from the ribbon toolbar, 'Add hyperlink' was a very common action for me, that wasn't present in the context menu, so I had to add it via customising quick access - which made it easier to access, but still didn't place it into the context menu. It's great to see that it's now in the context menu.

Print preview

Definitely a nice feature, well done. Although, I have this feature at OS software level, and it was missing from SoftMaker only because SoftMaker uses its own print dialogue.

No compatibility prompt

Well, it's nice but... In SoftMaker 2024 I regularly got the prompt, but didn't actually understand how to make a choice, or what the reasons would be for either choice. If the two choices made any difference it would have been helpful if they were explained; if they still make a difference, then it would be helpful to know how I could still make a choice.

Page background

That was a frustration previously. Specifically, I design certificates with buff background, and export as pdf... only to discover the buff background didn't export as expected. I had found workarounds, but it's good that it works as expected out-of-the-box.
