CJK characters (Hiragana/Katakana) rendering as square boxes

Post by hla »

# CJK characters (Hiragana/Katakana) rendering as square boxes in grid cells despite rendering correctly in the formula bar

Issue Description:
Japanese characters (Hiragana and Katakana) fail to render inside grid cells when mixed with standard Latin text, displaying empty square boxes instead. However, the exact same text renders correctly in the Formula Bar.

Details & Context:
Font used: Calibri (14 pt)
Behavior: In cell I22, text containing Japanese readings (like Kun: いえ, うち / On: カ, ケ) displays as missing character boxes inside the worksheet cell, while the Formula Bar displays all Hiragana and Katakana glyphs properly.

Additional observation: When double-clicking the cell to enter In-Cell Edit Mode, the characters immediately render correctly. The issue only occurs in the standard static grid view (display mode).

Comparison: Microsoft Excel (Office 2021) handles font fallback for Calibri gracefully in this scenario and renders all CJK characters inside cells without issue.

I have attached a screenshot demonstrating the mismatch between the cell display, the formula bar, and the edit mode.
