Tracking changes issues with ODT

Post by lgsl »

I was working on a file, originally created on Libreoffice. On this particular file there are comments on «deleted» changes. TM beta 5, as well as TM 2024 are unable to display the information correctly. At the beginning of the document TM displays a line fro every comment that reads «Comment added».

Please check the attached test file that illustrates the issue. Simply open on TM.

On TM 2024 the issue is even worse since the comment bubble leaks information that it should not and could be considered a security risk.

#1 The comments on "deleted" changes are not an issue; it just depends on whether you have set the deletion changes to be displayed in the comments pane or in some other way (e.g., strikethrough).

You can change this appearance under "Review > Changes (little arrow bottom right)" and in the "Track Changes Options" dialog, set "Deleted Text" to "Strikethrough."

#2 Not sure why TextMaker shows "Comment added" at the top whereas LibreOffice Writer doesn't, I made a report to our developers about this.

Indeed. It was just to illustrate the issue. What I meant to show was the fact that, when you are making changes to a document, as I was, and comments were added to "deleted" changes explaining as to why, they behave as expected but, as you saw for yourself, the "comment added" was shown, one for each comment. Your item 1 is not the issue, it was just a reproduction of what I was doing on the real document, the real issue is item 2. Imagine a document with 50 comments and on the beginning of the document, 50 "comment added".

On TM2024 the behavior is the same, but on the author of the comment, additional information leaks, like, for instance the editor, build and architecture of the build of LibreOffice Write, besides other details that, while part of the document metadata, should not be leaked in such way.

When trying to save this file, Beta6 simply stops responding. This can also be reproduced with the 2024 version. I had to kill the process from a terminal

We have forwarded details of both issues to our developer team for further investigation.

Issue #2 should be fixed with the next beta.

Developers are still working on the "program stops responding" issue.

Glad to hear it. What about the issue I reported a while back about comments loosing all styling when saving on ODT? IT affects both 2024 and the Beta, just as this one does.

Is the issue you are describing already covered in that thread? If not, please post your query there instead. Keeping related discussions in one place helps avoid confusion and makes it easier for us to track and address issues.

I reported it months ago (August 2025) on the 2024 section of the forum. Last reply I got from you (December) was that you had no updates. Since this beta is the focus of the developer team, I am letting you know 2026 has the same issue.
