Columns Not Working

Post by rbruceterry »

Textmaker produces two and three columns on a page; however, they do not work. Instead of going down the column, text is spread across the columns resulting in nonsense. This problem is also in Textmaker 2024. In the Classic toolbar menu, the column icon is mislabeled as Sections. It is correctly labeled as Columns in the Ribbon menu.

This is not a problem, but intended behavior. By default, the column height is set to “Auto.” To adjust this, you can change the Height parameter from “Auto” to either “Page height” or “Fixed height” based on your needs.

This setting is found in the Sections menu because column layout is a property of a document section. But this name will be updated in the next Beta.

I have tested it by changing it to "page height" as you suggested. It works then as I expect it to work. I suggest that "page height" should be the default setting. "Auto" is unexpected behavior. And one has to chose "More" in order to find the setting. The setting is not available simply by choosing the quick number of columns. Further, one has to change it to "page height" every time one goes into Textmaker. Changing the setting does not persist across usages. Personally, I see no purpose in having a blank vertical space down the middle of one's text, which is what "Auto" produces. And once again, if one is coming from MS-Word, one would expect "page height" to be the default.

I agree. In most cases, one fills one column after another, so "Page height“ should be the default. The behaviour with „Auto“ is counterintuitive and likely to confuse many users.

I have forwarded this as an improvement suggestion…

Counter-intuitive "auto" is still the default as of beta seven.
