Installation fail

Post by Woody44 »

I am attempting to install FreeOffice 2024 onto Linux Mint Cinnamon 22 -- the Ubunto version, not LMDE6. I have downloaded the instructions from

https://www.freeoffice.com/en/service/t ... icks/linux

When I try to run the installation, I see an error message scrolling past that says something about the file not having a date, so it is unable to download. After that, the 'Install" command doesn't run because it can't find the file.

What am I doing wrong? I really REALLY want to check out FreeOffice under Linux.

Sorry for the delay. I had to learn how to do a screen shot in Linux.

Hello, SuperTech -

Do you have any suggestions? I would really like to install FreeOffice for testing under Linux.

Yes, here it should be " -qO- " after wget but you typed only " -qO " means a missing "-" which creating this error.

Code: Select all

wget -qO- https://shop.softmaker.com/repo/linux-repo-public.key | gpg --dearmor > /etc/apt/keyrings/softmaker.gpg

Thanks. I got it installed. Thankfully, it looks just like the Windows version. This makes Linux usable. LibreOffice is fine for some people, but there are some things that I can do easily in TextMaker that appear to be impossible in LibreOffice writer.

Now I just have to find a 32-bit copy of an older version of FreeOffice to install on an old mini computer that can't handle 64-bit software.

Sorry, but I'm back. I was able to get FreeOffice running on Linux Mint Cinnamon (Ubuntu) by installing manually. However, I didn't like the dual boot option, and I really wanted LMDE6, not the Ubuntu version of Mint Cinnamon. I have "upgraded" my Linux experimental computer to an older but still functional Toshiba laptop using a fresh SSD drive with no operating system. This one supports 64-bit. I have installed LMDE6 as the distro. It includes LibreOffice, but I really REALLY don't like LibreOffice so I want to install FreeOffice (for now). If I change to Linux when support for Windows 10 ends next October, I'll move up to the commercial version of SoftMaker Office.

For now, I need to figure out how to install FreeOffice to LMDE6 -- preferably in the configuration that allows it to up date automatically. As a complete rookie with Linux, I read the installation instructions and they make no sense to me. Can someone please explain the procedure to me in small words and short sentences that my little brain can comprehend?

I have followed the instructions for installing to Debian from here: https://www.freeoffice.com/en/service/t ... icks/linux

It doesn't work.

Please remember -- I know NOTHING about Linux. I need help.

Thanks.

On November 6 you have opened a second thread on the same topic in the other sub-forum: https://forum.softmaker.com/viewtopic.p ... 896#p81896

PSE have one of both closed and continue the discussion in only one place.

Have you read my answer to your post? Your problem is unrelated to SoftMaker Office.

I got LMDE6 Cinnamon -64 as my standard OS.

I just downloaded FreeOffice as a DEB-packet.
Then in a file manager (Nemo) double-click on that file and gdebi starts.
In there click green button to Install.
Enter your PW
It takes (unusual long) time, there is theme/icons to update.

There is also some error messages in Gdebi but the installation continues and the programs works.
