Keyboard Input Methods don't work on Linux version of FreeOffice

Post by annavan »

Recently, I bought a new Chromebook( Acer Chromebook 314 CB314-1HT). Because I am a Vietnamese, I changed the Input Methods to Vietnamese( Telex) and Vietnamese(VNI). The ones work really great on Chrome browser, Playstore applications and in File Manger. However, when I installed Linux application of FreeOffice via DEB file, I cannot type any Vietnamese characters even though I had changed the input method from the US( default) to Vietnamese (Telex or VNI) before opening Linux container. I also tried some other languages like French, German but it didn’t work too. It is likely that the Input Methods only supports English(US)-the default input method on any Chromebook. I also noticed that I needed to install another package of libreoffice(sudo apt install -y libreoffice libreoffice-gtk3) to make libreoffice have the ability to type Vietnamese letters with the US keyboard because if I only installed the default command(sudo apt install libreoffice), it didn’t work like Free office 2024.

I want to give more information on this issue as I find out that Chromebook Input Methods only support Linux GTK-based applications. It makes very difficult for both developers and users to develop, change and use the Linux applications effectively. I hope that Softmarker staffs will take a closer look and fix this issue as soon as possible. I will make a video when I get from from my business trip.

It is really disappointed that my issue isn’t solved or answered by any admin or moderator at this forum. At least, if you cannot give a support for people using Free version, you should let them now. By the way, this issue also happens with other Softmaker commercial versions when I gave them a try. However, everything works perfectly in Linux container on Chromebook with other Office suite such as Libreoffice, OnlyOffice and OpenOffice.

Chromebook is not officially supported. This has been stated on this forum many times over the years and is well documented. Have you enabled extended support for Asian fonts?

Unfortunately, I was unable to click the "OK" button after selecting the option "extended support for Asian font" because the Option menu under tab File cannot be resized. As a result, I cannot save my choice at all.

This seems to a resolution related problem, so change your screen resolution and then try if you are able to save the settings.
