Selection and Addition

So I cannot figure out how the Selection of calls works like in Excel.

In excel you can highlight multiple cells and see a count at the bottom bar. Even if you have a filter on, the count is correct for what is highlighted. I cannot figure out the numbers here. They don't seem to work correctly. How does this work?
