Perpetual License?

Post by RKanarek »

Greetings,

The option of purchasing a perpetual license was noticeable by its absence on SM's website. I find this troubling.

Over the decades I've been using computers, I've noticed quite a few software companies that have adopted the attitude that, if [insert name of megacorp software company here] can do it, we, [insert name of minor, since deceased software company here], can do it, too. This seldom ends well. (Of course, most things seldom end well, but let's stay focused. ;-)

Given that Softmaker's primary competitor is not Microsoft Office, but are, apparently, Google Office, LibreOffice, and Microsoft Office Basic -- all of which are free (except for two, which have a privacy cost), is SM quite sure that poking the sleeping bear (it's customer base) is a good idea?

The home page says: «SoftMaker Office Professional 2026, the new version with a permanent license, will be released in a few weeks.» This may be due to the fact most of the new features present on NX are AI related. I would hope they are adding something else to make it attractive to buy, otherwise, if you do not require any of the new formulas present on PlanMaker, possibly, most people wont update. Don't get me wrong, the improvement to comments in TextMaker is quite nice, but not necessary a game-changing feature to make you update.

Greetings,

ST: If one clicks on the the link you supplied (which is located at https://www.softmaker.com/en/products/softmaker-office),
Softmaker - Are you looking for Perpetual Licenses - 2026-07-22_011935.png
one is take to a web page where the first three items for sale are non-perpetual licenses and the fourth is, as Woody44 already mentioned, for SM 2024. Is this German attention to detail? :? Wouldn't it have been a swell idea to have mentioned on that web page that a perpetual license for SM 2026 is in the pipeline, or was the absence not due to sloppiness?

I have always purchased every new version of SMO so as to support its development. In return, the off line help has been taken away, TM's search feature has been screwed up, and nothing has been done to correct TMs few but (IMHO) significant defects. I'm glad to read that a perpetual license will be available for SMO; perhaps some day I will buy it.

Related (I think) question:

In the past, there were two versions of SoftMaker Office offered under perpetual license: Standard, and Professional. When I click the link for perpetual license now, all I see is SoftMaker Office Professional. Has the Standard version been discontinued?

It's actually stated right on the website, on the product page itself: "If you order SoftMaker Office Professional 2024 now, you'll receive the upgrade to SoftMaker Office Professional 2026 free of charge when it becomes available."

There won't be a Standard 2026.
