Hello,
I have a problem and I would like to ask for help. Every time I modify a file and save it, it jumps to the first free space in the grid on my desktop. I have documents arranged in my own way on the desktop and it is slightly irritating. I also have the backup option turned off.
Has anyone found a solution for this?
File change position on desktop when saved
Re: File change position on desktop when saved
Thank you for sharing your issue. However, please note that FreeOffice does not manage document display locations, as this is determined by the operating system.
Re: File change position on desktop when saved
Right click on a blank area of your desktop.
From the pop-up menu, click "Personalize"
Click "Themes" in the panel to the left
Scroll down until you see 'Desktop Icon Settings" -- click
Toward the bottom of the resulting pop-up, there's a check box labeled 'Allow themes to change desktop items" Be sure that check box is NOT checked.
Click OK.
Restart the computer and test.

Re: File change position on desktop when saved
a) The described file movement issue occurs because the program executes a common save process: it creates a new file upon saving, deletes the old file once the save is successful, and then renames the new file to the original file's name. This sequence causes the operating system to treat the file as new, leading to its icon relocation on the desktop.
b) This icon relocation issue does not occur in the paid SoftMaker Office 2024 version. Its advanced backup features resolve the problem as a side effect by overwriting the original file directly instead of deleting and renaming it.
c) General tip: For optimal management, files should be organized logically into named folders (such as Documents, Projects, or Pictures) for easy navigation using File Explorer. The desktop is best utilized as a temporary workspace for currently active files or program shortcuts, not as a permanent storage location.
