Odd/Even page headers and footers

Post by seasoned_geek »

I know. Everyone is going to say "create a custom page format/layout for odd and even pages", but that's a royal PITA when all you want is a page number on the outside corner.

Yes, I've had to do it when I had running page headers listing the chapter title in other books, but its a lot of work. When someone just wants to put the page number in the upper outer corner, a cool feature would be

header-page-number-outer
footer-page-number-outer

hopefully the attachment shows the sad state of the default options (at least for 2021 commercial)

If you want to take it one step further, add the ability to turn header/footer off for specific pages. WordPerfect used to have this back in the days of DOS and OS/2.

Haven't tried with TextMaker, but they used to let you override the headers too. Didn't have to create

Chapter-7-first-page
Chapter-7-even-page followed by Chapter-7-odd-page
Chapter-7-odd-page followed by Chapter-7-even-page

for each chapter.

Having to do that with LibreOffice is one of the many things I hated about LO.

Just my 0.0002 cents

In TextMaker, this is a piece of cake. Choose "Different left and right pages“ in Format > Chapter, then go to Insert > Header, and you will find all you need in the "Header and Footer" bar at the bottom of the page:

NB: This is only the quick menu, there are even more options available.
