Joining PDFs created with a non-duplex ADF with odd and even numbered pages alternatingly

Post by Christian T »

I used to have a printer that has an automated document feeder with duplex unit.

Unfortunately it jammed rather often, so my new printer only has a single-side ADF (automatic document feeder). Also, duplex ADFs are really expensive.
To scan double-sided document, I now need to either manually scan the sides one by one, or I could automatically scan all odd pages and then all even pages and "weave" the documents together in FlexiPDF. I'd have to do that by reordering pages manually, though.

So I'd like to suggest an "ADF duplex" mode where FlexiPDF accepts two files, an odd and an even file, and the odd file may have at max one page more than the even file, and the mode would "weave" the PDFs into one file, alternatingly adding one odd and one even page, until all pages are added. That feature would basically enable all owners of single-side ADFs to do "duplex scans" with low jamming risk and no costs for the premium duplex ADF unit, creating an added value which alone would be worth buying FlexiPDF :-)

While this function is not yet included in FlexiPDF, I use a workaround: the scanner output should not be two large files, but rather one file for each page. I then use a file renaming tool to add initial numbering to the file names. For the odd files, I start with 01 and add two for the following files (01, 03, 05, etc.). For the even files, I do the same, starting with 02 (02, 04, 06, etc.).Then all files can be imported in the right order.

Thanks for the suggestion, that's a great workaround, and I think it's also possible to split the imagined ADF-produced odd- and even-page files into single pages, and then execute your plan, with any scripting language and some command line PDF tools.

But... we're on a SoftMaker forum here... and some of my relatives definitely can't script but know FlexiPDF... so I though maybe some FlexiPDF product manager drops and sees the suggested feature as low-hanging fruit for the next sprint and SoftMakers apprentices :-)
