Mac OSX again

Post by erika » Thu Aug 02, 2007 12:50 pm

I have been using Mac OSX sometimes in addition to Linux. I need a decent office suite with a decent price on that. I don't want to go for Microsoft office. It is extremely expensive and bloated compared to SoftMaker.

I know it is hard to port SoftMaker to Mac OSX, but it will worth. You have a chance as Microsoft delayed the release of Office Mac OSX.

I certainly knew that I was not wrong. Check this article and figures. There lies a fortune on the MacOSX clients who will definitely need an office suite. Microsoft has discovered that cash cow. Why SoftMaker is sleeping? :)

Mac sales of Office are becoming increasingly important to Microsoft. Mac Office sales are growing much faster than Office for Windows, the Associated Press notes: "Sales of Office for Macs rose about 72% from 2001 to 2006, compared with an increase of about 18% for Windows versions. Sales of the Mac versions made up about 20% of dollars spent on Office at U.S. retail stores and Web sites in 2006, up from 4% in 2001."

Dear Erika:

Currently we have a lot of work to do with SoftMaker Presentations and a new version of DataMaker, PlanMaker and TextMaker for Windows, Linux, Pocket PCs and Windows CE. To port our office to Mac OSX sounds interesting, I know, but currently we have just so many other projects yet to finish.

Marketshare for OS/X up from 4% in 2006 to 8% in 2008... perhaps this changes the cost/benefit calculation for porting SoftMaker to the Mac? When did you last do that cost/benefit calculation? In 2004?

For what it's worth Linux has a market share of 0,6% - I guess it must have been an easy port.

NeoOffice is rather sluggish on all but the fastest Macs. Mellel is a fine program, but it's user interface philosophy is rather unusual and needs some time and experience to become comfortable.

For those of you interested in a word processor for Mac OS/X but disappointed to find that Text Maker is not available on this platform I'd like to point your attention to the fact that Mellel is presently available as part of a package deal at mupromo.com, where you get 7 applications including Mellel and BookEnds(!) for a total price of 50 USD.
