Default object properties

When I set a text frame properties [eg outline thickness and colour] and applied Set as Default, I thought that the next text frame I inserted would have the same properties, but it doesn't, having line thickness automatically set to no line.
A new Autoshape inserted DOES have the new properties from the applied defaults so if I want to make a new 'text frame' with the new outline properties I can insert a new rectangle autoshape, right-click on it and 'Add text' but this starts centred. I can adjust properties to start text from the top of the shape but it is still centred left to right.
Alternatively I can right click on each new text frame and select the outline width I require, with the colour already chosen from Set as Default on the first frame.
I don't know how to download a simple document to illustrate this, but hope that my description outlines the problem.
