SoftMaker's command-line Debian installation instructions

Post by detoo » Fri Jun 26, 2020 4:06 am

https://www.freeoffice.com/en/tips-and-tricks-linux

I am running softmaker-freeoffice-2018_976-01_amd64.deb with 64-bit Q4OS Centaurus (Debian 10, aka Buster)

Please note:

Code: Select all

su -

does not work. You must use:

Code: Select all

sudo su
Command-line installation also generated *many* errors, including missing dependencies. These had to be resolved with GDebi.
To install GDebi:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gdebi
Now I'm down to just two errors:

Code: Select all

Warning: Cannot convert string "vlines2" to type Pixmap
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Please advise.

Otherwise, everything seems to work OK. Thanks!

1. Why should "su -" not work? I am using Buster all the time with this.

2. That's what the "apt install -f" is for. dpkg installs without fixing dependencies, and apt install -f fixes them.

3. These are warnings by your Linux's desktop icon tools. You should ignore them, they throw all kinds of warnings all the time. You can report them to their developers if you wish... ;-)

Why should "su -" not work? I am using Buster all the time with this.
When I entered su- it requested my password; I entered the correct password (multiple times when prompted), but kept getting this:

Code: Select all

su: Authentication failure
Although under the hood Debian Buster and Q4OS Centaurus are essentially the same, perhaps this is unique to the latter? I don't know.
That's what the "apt install -f" is for. dpkg installs without fixing dependencies, and apt install -f fixes them.
dpkg -i generated multiple dependency errors. Instructions did not mention this; apparently they assume a level of proficiency with command line that I don't yet have.
These are warnings by your Linux's desktop icon tools. You should ignore them, they throw all kinds of warnings all the time.
That's all I need to know. Thanks!

su requires the root password. Did you enter that, or your own password?

I entered my own password, which is the same as the SuperUser login password in Q4OS.

My quick web search tells me that the root password is disabled by default in Q4OS. So, unless you explicitly set one, you must use sudo instead of su -
