extend background colour into/past the left margin selectively

Post by dbray9@gmail.com »

I would like to extend background colour into/past the left margin selectively to highlight a key message in a document;
  • is there a way to do this. and if so how?
  • I could create a 2-cell table for the selected text; and background colour both cells. That is just waaay toooo clunky
thanks

I see two other ways:

1. Make the left margin narrower and use a paragraph style with left indentation for all lines (can also be done via the horizontal ruler).
2. Insert the background colour as a drawing (Object > New drawing; Rectangle with filling, no lines, Layout: Move with text; text wrapping: behind text). This can reach into the margin.

Personally, I would prefer the second way. Then you can fine-tune the background area and, if there are several key messages in the document, simply copy and paste the background.

Thanks Jossi
shaded background behind text (re-usable no less)
  • elegant sol'n
  • I do it all the time in presentations
  • completely forgot, we can do that in docs too.
