Referring to numbers in lists - is this possible?

Post by colonel_panic »

Hello

At work, I have to draft reasonably complex legal documents. They take the form of numbered lists, although most of them are written from templates.
It would save me a lot of headaches if I could insert fields that referred to the numbers of other list items.

For example, I would like to be able to write "Please see clause x and y", where x and y were different numbers.

Is this possible?

If it is a numbered list (numbered automatically via Format > Bullets and Numbering..., not by hand), you may set a bookmark (Insert > Bookmark...) at the beginning of each list item. Then you can enter a cross reference (Insert > Cross reference...) referring to a bookmark. Set to "Show number", it shows the number of the bookmarked paragraph in the list.
