No import from eMClient

Good afternoon,
Yesterday I purchased SoftMaker Office 2016 pro and installed it. Whereas the installation itself went without a glitch, I cannot import the E-mails from EMClient. The import routine correctly identifies the folders I created in eMC and reproduces them in Thunderbird. But then the programme just hangs there, with the progress bar half way. I have checked in Task Manager and Th'bird is using a massive amount of RAM and some CPU, but does nothing at all. Not a single e-mail is copied.
I made a copy of the mail_data.dat file onto another drive to see if importing from there worked. Th'bird didn't even recognise it as a valid file.
Your help would be appreciated, as the main reason why I upgraded to 2016 was the possibility of using Thunderbird. At this stage that is simply not possible.
