Excel order of precedence error

Post by snowshed » Sun May 20, 2018 5:58 pm

I just came across a note in the installed help files about an order of precedence error in Excel.

Is the error in all versions of Excel, or just specific versions?

Hi, Sven,

It's not an error message, it's a note in the help files.

"* Note: In Excel, the order of precedence is incorrect for the exponentiation operator (^) and the negation operator (-), whereas PlanMaker uses the correct order. For example, in Excel, -1^2 returns 1 (wrong), whereas PlanMaker returns -1 (correct, since ^ has precedence over -)."

Since posting the message, I did some research, found and extensive article on this On Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations

You would think the people who created the operating systems, and all spreadsheet apps and database apps, etc., would have followed rules that were apparently in place for years before there were computers. :-(
