Keyboard shortcuts for symbols.

Post by tigreseis » Tue Nov 28, 2017 3:26 pm

I use the check mark a lot.

I tried to setup a keyboard shortcut to insert the check mark without having to go to the insert menu all the time.

No shortcut seems to work. Everything I have entered just inserts a U with 2 dots on top.

The same thing occurs if I type the unicode "f0fc" then ctrl+alt+shift+f12

Just a u with 2 dots.

The Unicode standard has check signs on position U+2713 and U+2714 in Unicode block "Dingbats". Fonts with a comprehensive set of Unicode characters like Arial Unicode MS, Linux Biolinum or Linux Libertine have the checksign there.
The Wingdings font, which was developed before Unicode, doesn't follow the Unicode standard insofar as all its characters are in Unicode block "Private Use Zone", beginning with U+E000. This block is not defined in Unicode, which means that characters in this range will only work with the font they were defined in, not with other fonts. So U+F0FC will give a check sign only if Wingdings is selected as font, otherwise some other character will be shown (depending on the Private Use Zone definitions of the actual font – in most fonts this will be "ü").

So basically you have two options:
1. Use U+2713 or U+2714 with any Unicode-savvy font; or
2. continue to use U+F0FC but always make sure that Wingdings is selected as font.
As long as you are working on your own computer it doesn't make much difference which option you choose. Problems may arise when documents are forwarded to other persons who don't have the necessary fonts installed (Arial Unicode MS or something similar in case 1, Wingdings in case 2).

When you define and use a keyboard shortcut, the character is inserted using the font actually in use; so if you are typing e. g. in Times New Roman and press the keyboard shortcut you defined for the check sign in Wingdings, the character will be inserted in Times New Roman, not in Wingdings, and so will show up as ü instead of the check sign. You would have to change the font to Wingdings in Format > Character... first (and then back again to Times New Roman). There is no keyboard shortcut which automatically changes the font for you.

In TextMaker, there is still another way using the SmartText function, which allows you to define formatted SmartText entries in a defined font. Unfortunately this doesn't work in PlanMaker. So to get uninterrupted typing in PlanMaker, maybe it would be better to define a shortcut for U+2713 or U+2714 and use a font which has the checkmark on this position.

Now to find a font in Planmaker that has that. The fonts you listed are not in Planmaker.

All these fonts are gratis and may be downloaded free of charge.

Linux Libertine and Biolinum are here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxlibertine/
(the downloaded archive contains both font families; Biolinum doesn't have the checkmark, Libertine has)
Arial Unicode MS: https://www.wfonts.com/font/arial-unicode-ms
Other very good free Unicode fonts are:
DejaVu: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dejavu ... ecommended
(has lots of dingbats)
SIL Gentium: https://software.sil.org/gentium/download/

Just download, unpack and install. :D
