Hyperlinks: Relative path problem etc.

Post by tomos » Tue Jan 24, 2017 5:24 pm

Summary:
if I edit a relative link to direct it to a different file, it fails -- i.e. it cannot find the new file

I have a link in a cell using a relative path.
I want to change it to another file in the same directory as the current linked file, so I:

# click on the link symbol
# leaving path the same, I change the file name (in this example, from Nave_B.pdf to Nave_A.pdf

I get the error message 'File not found'
Screenshot - 2017-01-24 , 16_51_10.jpg
below a working Nave_A.pdf link

If I then copy the filepath for the new file, paste it in, and strip the start of the path (to make it relative) it *will* work.

Current version of Softmaker Office (rev. 763.1207)
Windows 7 x64
using a *.xlsx file

you can reproduce this in any xslx file (I didnt try other formats)
e.g. attached:

You will need to create two files in the same directory as the attached:
Test1.txt
Test2.txt

Link

click on link button
edit link text to Test2
leads to error message
Attachments
Link_TEST.xlsx

1. I created 2 files: Test1.txt and Test2.txt
2. I downloaded and opened your file in the same folder
3. I changed the link to Test1.txt
=>Works (It opens Text1.txt when I click on the link)
4. I changed the link to Test2.txt
=>Works (It opens Text2.txt when I click on the link)

Tested with pmw16 rev.763.1207 in Windows 10 64 bit

apologies Sven --
I had made a typo in the test file -- one of the files was called 'Tast' instead of Test.
I'll post the original problem file here if I can reproduce the problem when content is stripped out.

The problem as said is with the file -- the file does have a longish history, with stuff copied over from much earlier files. Has been saved in xls, pmd, and now xlsx formats.
NOTE:
the issue at hand is not important for me -- only follow up on this if it is of interest to you.

Attached is a copy of the problem file with all other info cut out.
I discovered I could reproduce the problem in a simpler manner:

=>
Select the cell with link
Clcik the Link icon
press Ctrl+C to copy selected text
press [OK] to close the hyperlink dialogue
=>
Error message

this is driving me mad:
if I create a sibling folder (to the xlsx file) with two text files in it, changing/copying the link works fine -- the relative link is:
New Folder\Test2.txt

I'd forget about this if I were you -- I can 100% guarantee it's happening here (the link in the attachment above are working when I click on them, but I get the error message as described above).
I dont have time to check all possible variations (could it be just with PDFs -- makes no sense but..., or maybe relative links that are two folders deep) but, if I do find out what is causing the problem, I will report back

@Sven -
it appears I have found the problem -- all the links (and there's a lot of them) in the file are using forward slash, instead of backwards slash:
in the attachment above it's --
Linked_Files/Artifacts/Finds01_Bone.pdf
=>
oddly they still work -- just dont allow editing.

New links are working correctly in the file: if I browse to the file I want to link, or paste the filepath, and then edit to make links relative, everything is ok. The above link (newly created) is correctly with backslashes:
Linked_Files\Artifacts\Finds01_Bone.pdf

Maybe there was a problem between this file and Planmaker until recently that has been fixed at some stage? (Many of the links would have been created autumn 2016.)
Or maybe there is another factor I havent noted.

Did a quick search this morning -- learning about early operating systems.

The error message could be a windows problem:

http://www.howtogeek.com/181774/why-win ... d-slashes/
system developers ... go out of their way to accept any type of slash possible.
[..]
You can still type commands like cd C:/Windows/ into the Command Prompt today and you’ll be taken to the correct folder.

This doesn’t work everywhere in Windows, however. If you type a path like C:/Users/Public into the Open dialog and press Enter, you’ll see an error saying that the file name isn’t valid.

Image
But still wondering *why* filelinks were made thus, and today, in the same file, they are made correctly.
=> I normally would have copied the path using Directory Opus file manager, so there is a possibility that the problem was there (but I didnt find anything related in their forum, and am pretty sure that would have been reported).
=> Note there was some very old content copied into this file (some going back to early 1990's).
