If I want to create a document with the cover page, title page, table of contents etc unnumbered, and perhaps the 4th page starting the page numbering with page no. 1, how do I do this?

Insert a chapter break before the first numbered page (Insert > Break > Chapter Break). Then go to the first page of the new chapter, invoke Format > Chapter and set "Page Number" to "Value" and "1".

There is a problem with chapter page numbering. If you save the document in .docx format, you will find that when you reload the document all the chapter page numbers will have been reset to page number in entire document. To retain chapter page numbers you have to save in .tmd format.
