Read-only message popping up

Post by ecbritz » Thu May 05, 2016 11:53 am

I attach a Read-only message I get frequently when trying to open a saved document. Typically, if I attach a saved Textmaker-produced .doc document to an email, and then click on the attachment icon to make sure I attached the correct document, I would get this message. Its not a terrible problem because I can edit the Read-only document and save it, but it will have a number added to the saved filename.

How should I understand this message popping up? What should I do about it, if anything?

I don't think the location 'AppData\Local\Packages' should be used for storing user documents. It seems to be intended as a repository for configuration files relating to Windows Store applications.

I agree. Please try to store your files in another folder with write permissions like C:\Users\ecbri\Documents.

I tested it with a fresh installed and fully updates Windows 10 Pro 64bit and TextMaker 2016 Professional rev.752 (current revision). When I open an .doc file attached to an e-mail in the included Mail program in Windows 10, TextMaker properly opens it. When I look in File=>Save as, it tries to save it under the \AppData\Local folder. this works properly for me. No error message that there is no write access to that folder.

Thanks for the responses. I've been working on a computer without Softmaker installed the past few days and will return to the problem soon, when I work on my laptop again.

Thanks for the advice but I would not dream of saving document files at the location 'AppData\Local\Packages'. As far as I can see, the only file type locations one can set (under Tools > Options > Files) are the folder for the templates and the folder for automatic backups. The location for a saved document file is chosen or confirmed every time you save that file, and 'AppData\Local\Packages' is the last place that location would be.

How should I understand the error message and how do I prevent this recurring behaviour?

Storing attachments in AppData\Local\Packages\... is a design decision by the Mail program included with Windows 10.

When you click on an attachment, Mail stores the file there, then opens TextMaker and passes it the file name including path. TextMaker tries to open it. If it finds out it is write-protected, it tells you so. But as sven-l wrote, we tried that with a current Windows 10, and the file was not write-protected.

Maybe you need to update your Windows 10 (again).

The matter of reinstalling Win 10 was taken up with Microsoft Support. If you need to reinstall Win 10, the best solution is an "in-place upgrading". Contact Microsoft Support Chat. Ask the support assistant to find out what exact ISO you need to download, by checking your computer via remote control. Then download the ISO and follow the instructions given by the support assistant.

For reinstallation of Windows, do not reset Win 10 to "Restore to factory settings."

Discuss "in-place upgrading" with Contact Microsoft Support Chat. Ask the support assistant to find out what exact ISO you need to download, by checking your computer via remote control. Then download the ISO and follow the instructions given by the support assistant.

A clean solution would be to start again from scratch (backup your important data, format the Windows 10 partition and install it again).

No installation key is necessary when Win 10 is reinstalled over the existing, already installed Win 10.

Frankly, we have no idea about these Windows-specific questions. You might try asking in a forum that features Windows 10.

Yes, one can chat with Microsoft online, although the advice is not always dependable. I'll ask though.

Don't lose your original Win 8 or Win 8.1 product key.

Microsoft Support Chat gave me a way to reinstall Win 10 (rather than reset it) without needing any installation key. It is called "in-place upgrading". You first have to download the applicable Win 10 ISO. If you would like to do "in-place upgrading", you could start by looking at http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1639 ... grade.html . Avoid resetting Windows to "Restore Factory Settings", this will not result in a repaired Windows.
