Problem with .xls files created by planmaker

There seems to be a problem with saving a file as .xls. I can duplicate the problem by starting a new file in Planmaker for android obtained from Google Play store November 2014 (trial version),
then type anything into one cell,
then save as an .xls file,
then copy to windows 7 based PC,
then try to open in excel 2010 for windows.
Excel opens the file but places it in protected view because it detects a problem with the file.
Other software that is designed to read .xls files also has a problem with the file generated by planmaker.

Saving as an .xlsx file seems to work OK

Is this a problem with the trial version or a known bug?
