Opening RTF with Chinese characters

Post by AIBLTD » Thu Jul 05, 2018 8:05 am

Hi everyone, just wonder if anyone is having problem reading RTF files with Chinese characters?

I save .RTF files from TextEdit from Mac having either traditional or simplified Chinese characters in Unicode (UTF-8) but not able to view any characters in it when opening with TM for Android.

Any thoughts perhaps?

Can you upload a file? I can test it on mine and send you a screen shot. My phone is Chinese. I spent the last 6 of 7 years in China, so in theory... Should be able to get the right text.

For what it's worth, I just created an rtf doc, wrote a couple of sentences, saved it, closed it, opened it... and it was fine.

If the font cannot be found on the Android device, TextMaker uses a replacement font. It seems your replacement font does not offer Chinese characters. Please try another font.

Thanks for your replies, you guys are very helpful indeed.

I tried different fonts installed in Android Samsung Note8 and eventually the Chinese characters came out. The only thing missing was the paragraph indentations, line spacing and tab spacing, but I can live with that for now.

The next thing which I am having issue with the TM Android regarding this subject is to saving styles sheets, which I need some time to play with and see if there is a bug or just me.

Anyhow, thank you guys, much appreciated!

I am uploading a testing file. Jim, I just wonder what font in my Android could I possibly choose to replace for these texts? They are in English, TC and SC. Thanks!

Please test it with TextMakerHD Basic instead of TextMaker Mobile. Does it work better?

In fact I was testing it with TextMaker HD. I did not install TextMaker Mobile at all.

Any thoughts?

TextMaker 2016 uses the same rtf file filter as TextMaker HD for Android and it shows the characters properly on my Windows machine. so it is a font problem. Try using another font on your Android device that supports the used characters.

I don't think it's a font problem. Even the letters that appear make no sense. What it seems to be is that TextMaker guesses the encoding of the text file wrong. But you can control that. In File > Open, pick the file type "Text file, with additional options". Then you can select the correct encoding (character set) of the text file. Of course, you need to know what the encoding is.

No me neither. Please check with the attached screen capture for better reference. I am not able to type in Chinese characters from within TM's character style dialogue box.

I don't find any option available to selecting the decoding option from File/Open. Could you perhaps screen capture to direct me a bit please? Thanks!

Sorry, I was confused. This option is only available with plain-text files and not RTF.

And just another quick note to my previous message, that the .RTF file saved from MacOSX wasn't able to be opened by the pre-installed Microsoft Word properly.

I have found an interim solution. Saving files in .RTFD and it would come up in proper indentation. Change ALL fonts into the Chinese font TM supports. Attributes being retained are the bolding, underlining, (probably italicizing) paragraph alignment and tabbing. When it comes to fonts, I will forget about that for now.

Sorry for the delay, I've been on the move all summer and now am in a new position to boot.

I just tried something. I got the same results using Basic when opening the file, however, when I used TM on my computer or Google docs on the same phone, it looked just fine. Now sure what this means given the previous couple of posts but I thought I would throw that out there.
Cheers
