Post by erehwon » Wed Jan 09, 2013 12:44 am

other versions of textmaker allow left and right quotes on the soft keyboard. (eg windows phone)

Smart quotes are not possible because they confuse the input editors (IME, word completion etc.) of Android.

In the German forum, a user recommended MultiLing Keyboard (free app in Google Play Store) for typing left and right quotes.

Do they say how they do it with MultiLing? Do they provide the actual keys, or do you have to press a combination of keys?

I'm currently using the hackers keyboard, I can swap to French or Croation alphabet (and a lot more), but none of them have the left and right quotes. I'll give multiling a try.

thanks

This is a follow up to my earlier post.

I've discovered I can enter left or right quotes using hacker's Keyboard.
It has a compose mode (long press the circle key) which allows you to enter key combination that will generate the desired characters:
<" generates left quote
>" generates right quote
<' generates left single quote
>' generates right single quote

Their website gives a java file that contains all the key combinations:

For hardware keyboards, if your phone is rooted, you can dig into the kcm file and re-program alt-keystroke to fit your needs. For instance, on my Sidekick 4G, alt-f now brings up a left double quote instead of a bracket (alt-shift-f still brings up a bracket).

I have all manuscript punctuation necessary, but it was tricky. Curly quotes won't even show up in some word processors (ie KingSoft).

This is not a solution for everybody, and if users want to put together a proper manuscript, I hope TM can find a non-rooted workaround.
