email client

The one missing component that restricts a greater uptake of SoftMaker is a simple email client. SoftMaker have dabbled in the past with Thunderbird and eM Client, but these were both fairly unwieldy and complicated. May I suggest that you take a look at the excellent open source Claws Mail (or the ...

eMail and contacts

Previously, SoftMaker have tried both eMClient and Thunderbird as add on personal information managers, with mixed success. eMClient mangles dates on imports and causes duplicates and Thunderbird is poor at importing anything. Furthermore, they are both bloated and unresponsive. Nevertheless, it wou...

Slick email client

Why not incorporate a lightweight, slick, SoftMaker email client (its an easy thing to build) and dump the ungainly and overly complex Thunderbird. The Windows Live client that comes with Win 7 was actually quite good, excepting its calendar reminders, and was an exercise in simplicity and ease of u...

More sophisticated database

I suppose, with all this development going on, plans for a new database are still not on the radar? Rather than trying to emulate Access, why not simply develop the existing DBF capabilities - for example, one level of relational tables, better connectivity and so on. There must be a 'half way house...

The Ashampoo version

It seems the Ashampoo version of Office 2018 is exactly the same. The modules are even called TextMaker, Planmaker, Presentations etc. and the features seem exactly the same. At the moment the Ashampoo version is available for half the price and, apparently, features auto updates, but why not simply...

Re: Educational Version

There is now a FreeOffice 2018 version which provides the opportunity to explore the ribbon interface and other features. I must say that SoftMaker's implementation of ribbons is the best that I have ever seen and is extremely flexible. This is a notable achievement by the development team. They hav...

Re: « state of emergency »

It is not just France of course - similar attitudes are prevailing across the so-called 'civilised' world. There is a sort of evolution going on here. Did you watch the original Kenneth Clark series on 'Civilisation' ? (still available on a DVD set). It is interesting to walk with him through the se...

Re: Windows XP still in use?

Ah... that will be the majority view certainly. Nevertheless, systems approaching ends is something of a relative concept. They can be longer lived than many might suppose.

Re: Windows XP still in use?

Hi Jossi, Ditto with Linux - which started off on the right foot, but many distributions now are bloated and temperamental, although one or two remain quite interesting. I remember (in the good old days..) I ran a system with DRDOS. It was comprehensively documented, easy and intuitive to configure ...

Re: Windows XP still in use?

The problem is that, in our modern world, large software providers have constructed a business model based upon perpetual reinvention and remarketing of established functionality. For most, this cycle adopts a bell curve whereas, in the early days, they are refining the codebase and generally climbi...

Software Development

Its curious that we seem to be going backwards with software development in general as both operating systems and application software become increasingly bloated, unintuitive in use and unreliable. Furthermore, the realised performance has, in many cases, deteriorated quite noticeably. We also seem...

Re: SoftMaker Mail

Ah! Thank you, I thought it would be something like this.

Pity we cant rejuvenate it as a no cost option in SoftMaker Office. I think many, like myself, just want a simple, fast email client without all the bells and whistles.
