Texmaker not responding

Post by Wandering »

Texmaker not responding from time to time and I have to close its window forcibly.
Most often, this happens after closing Textmamer window or exiting the program.

Thank you for reporting this problem. I am unable to reproduce it but have forwarded the details for further investigation.

MacBook Pro M3 max
36GB mem. 400GB free space on SSD
Sequoia 15.3.2 (24D81)
TextMaker Professional 2024 (rev S1224.0308) 64bit ARM

I too did suddenly encounter massively unresponsive behaviour from TextMaker, today.
Whilst editing a 2000 word document, which was just text, with minimal formatting and no graphics, I was having to wait 5 or more seconds
- for the cursor to appear when I clicked on a text position,
- for a text selection to be highlighted,
- for keyboard-entered text to start appearing on the display,
- for the document to scroll when I rolled the mouse wheel.

I searched for clues that might explain this.
All other applications were working normally.
Activity Monitor was not showing anything seizing excessive resources.

This lasted about 30 minutes, then suddenly ended, and TM started working normally again.
The moment when normal behaviour resumed was immediately that I opened another document (in a new tab). I did this to try to find out whether the problem related just to one document. Normal instantaneous responsiveness was then immediately restored – to both of the open documents. I do not know whether it was opening the second document that cured it. That might have been just a coincidence.

It all seems to be working properly now, but, after reading about Valentyn's similar experience, I thought I should report this.

Immediately after submitting my first posting on this, when I returned to TM, the ultra-unresponsiveness had returned. I tried opening other documents. All were the same. I forgot to mention earlier that I had rebooted the Mac to see if that fixed it. It hadn't done. Now, I saved my document and exited from TM. It disappeared from the screen but it had not quit. I had to force it out.

I have also tried cleaning up my system with the CleanMy Mac maintenance app. I emptied the 'trash', freed RAM, freed purgeable space, and ran a malware check. I also have BitDefender running in the background for Internet security.

When I restarted TM after for-quitting it, the unresponsiveness was still the same. And when I go back, now, to TM, it is just the same. Whilst typing and editing this posting, though, and looking at other tabs in my browser, everything works very fast. It's just TM that is unresponsive.

I have tested PlanMaker. That is working normally.

More info:

I'm struggling away with this because I'm trying to work on a current document, and I just discovered something that might be important: When TM becomes massively unresponsive, I can cure it immediately by just slightly re-sizing the TM window.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for providing these details. To help us investigate further, please share your system information file (sminfo.txt). You can generate this file by:

1. Clicking the '?' (Help) menu.
2. Selecting About.
3. Choosing Write system information.

This file will help us better understand your system configuration and resolve the issue more efficiently.

Alternatively, you may try reinstalling SoftMaker Office on your Mac to resolve the issue. This often resolves unexpected software issues.

sminfo.txt attached as requested.

This is from the day after I experienced unresponsiveness, during which day I’ve been doing further work on the same document without experiencing a repeat of yesterday’s diminished TM performance.

It hasn’t happened to me again but I haven’t been using TM much.
But my earlier reports were accurate, so I’m just wondering, any resolution yet?

Since I'm a paying customer who opened a complaint/ticket on this and peed a Sunday down the drain trying to gather useful info; I'll share what I know.
  • If you install and use TextMaker on MX Linux this never happens. On Windows 10 it happens a lot
  • If you have Trend Micro Maximum Security installed, this happens constantly
  • If you remove Trend Micro Maximum Security and install Aura antivirus this happens intermittently
  • TextMaker does not play nice with the mouse. If you never need the mouse <ALT><TAB> around to other applications then back to TextMaker; cursor will appear and you can type. You cannot ever use the mouse again though.
  • Appears to be a not-insignificant memory management problem on Windows 10 which may or may not be related.

At first I thought TextMaker had ET Phone home going on, sending back usage/user information, and Trend Micro consuming the packets because it gets a bit aggressive when it comes to flagging "bad actors." It will even randomly consume BetterBird attempts to connect to my email server. They claim they don't do that. Switching to Aura eased but did not eliminate the problem.

Switching from TextMaker to Brave or Vivaldi browsers or BetterBird email client seems to dramatically increase the times TextMaker becomes a Dementia patient, you can see it sitting there looking at you, but it has no idea what is going on. Spending time in VS Codium or Diamond text editors making notes or whatever does not seem to give TextMaker Dementia.

During one of yesterday's instances I opened TaskManager and took a shot before I killed off TextMaker
TextMaker-003.PNG
Then I restarted and reloaded document
TextMaker-aftter-reload.PNG
After adding about another page of text to the document.
TextMaker-new-page-of-text.PNG
This is a machine I use for yocto builds when working on embedded systems/medical devices, so it is not the least bit constrained. Appears I can only have 3 images though.

What I can tell you is the <ALT><TAB> trick to get the cursor back only works a couple of times. If you use the mouse after that you are pretty much hosed.

Question:

What is your monitor situation?

The Windows 10 machine I'm having this issue on has a 2K monitor as primary and an "ordinary" viewsonic in a shared display mode.
displays-001.PNG
I'm just wondering if the C++ GUI/Application Framework they are using, or the OS itself, has an issue getting Windows stacked correctly in a mixed resolution environment. I realize this is a MAC thread, but there is a lot of Microsoft software on the MAC platform and most likely a cross platform library is being used here.

If you are on a laptop which has only one monitor, then this is useless speculation.
