Internal format for SoftMaker .doc files of XP/2003 type

Postby dhlytle » Mon May 29, 2017 3:54 am

I was having problems with search engines finding text in SoftMaker generated files saved in *.doc format. (version XP/2003)

Viewing the files with an editor, I saw a "00" character between each actual text character.
Similar documents created by MS Word 2000 did not produce that format, but read the Softmaker files without a problem.

Am I doing something the cause the creation of the added "00" characters?

I am attaching a simple example.

Operating system is Win XP.
(Yes, I know it is obsolete. I have an Win10 computer in my basement going though its shake-down cruise.)
I had some problems when I first tried to install the Softmaker products some months ago.

Thanks..

Was the attached sample file created with TextMaker? The Windows 10 file explorer shows the content properly.

The 0 bytes come from the fact that we always save text as Unicode in .doc format. Microsoft Word stores either the old ANSI format or Unicode, so you sometimes see the 0 bytes and sometimes not.
