Cannot save a text frame

Pardon my ignorance, but does anyone know how to save a text frame for later use in the current or another document?
I have tried every intuitive method I can think of.

If you save a document with an empty page contaning only the text frame you should be able open it later and copy and paste the text frame into other documents. When you copy and paste a text frame, both documents must be in Object mode.
