suggestion: auto replace hyphen > en-dash

Post by kgha »

I frequently - maybe too frequently - use dashes when writing. For years I've missed the automatic replacement that's part of MSWord, LO, and OO when using Textmaker. The Smart text function offers a workaround, but with a small snag: When writing e.g. "Mon- and Tuesdays", the hyphen after "Mon" is also replaced with an en-dash and has to be corrected. What I'm after is having a hyphen replaced only when it's both preceded and followed by a space. Have tried making the smart text entry 'space+hyphen' but that doesn't work.

That's still on our wish list and there is no schedule yet.

If you don't mind using a keyboard shortcut, you can go to insert symbol, then go to general punctuation and choose an en-dash. As a part of the dialogue, you can choose a keyboard shortcut for the en-dash, and use that shortcut to insert the dash.

This is not your preferred way of achieving an en-dash, but it does work, and places them wherever you want them.

I do this with em-dashes, using a keyboard shortcut. I also do it with ellipses.
