Option to straighten & "clean up" scanned pages?

Post by wbrells » Sat Jun 24, 2017 11:41 pm

I've been considering FlexiPDF 2017 as a replacement for my old Adobe Acrobat 9 which I use a lot to process scanned documents. I'm using a high speed document scanner which often causes the resulting pages to be slightly skewed. Fortunately, Acrobat provides several options for straightening and generally "cleaning up" scanned images before using OCR to generate searchable pages.

For my application it is really essential that at least a "straightening" option be available; otherwise, getting acceptable results from bulk scanning of documents is just not possible! Does FlexiPDF 2017 have any options for "fixing up" scanned documents? (I haven't seen any such options, but perhaps they are "hidden" in one of the menus...)

Thanks,
Wayne

When you scan pages from FlexiPDF (File > New > From Scanner...), they are deskewed automatically (at least, if "Recognise text (OCR)" is selected).

Unfortunately, my high-speed document scanner (a Fujitsu ScanSnap S500) does not include a TWAIN or WIA interface so I cannot use the File > New > From Scanner... option. Rather, I'm using the scanner to produce PDF files that then need to be deskewed and OCRed by a program such as FlexiPDF (which doesn't appear to offer such an option).

Maybe this is not the solution you are looking for, but my workflow is as follows: I scan all documents as image files (*.jpg or *.tiff), preprocess them with ScanTailor, then OCR them.
ScanTailor is an excellent free software with batch functions to rotate and split pages, deskew them, select content, add margins, despeckle and dewarp them automatically. Results are saved as TIFFs (b/w or grayscale/color), which can then be loaded into FlexiPDF or any other OCR program. In my experience, preprocessing with ScanTailor greatly enhances the accuracy of OCR results.

As a second thought, possibly a TWAIN oder WIA scanner driver for ScanSnap S500 might be downloaded directly from Fujitsu:

Jossi: Thanks for the info on ScanTailor - I'll check it out. Unfortunately, It may not work for me since the S500 scanner software will only produce PDF files (color or B&W) or JPG files (color only, for some reason). I'm quite certain that no TWAIN or WIA driver is available for the S500 - Fujitsu only provides such drivers on their more expensive line of document scanners. I'll probably stick with Acrobat 9 as long as I can keep it working under Windows 10, but I will let you know what I discover about ScanTailor. Thanks again, Wayne

A pity about Fujitsu. JPG files are fine as input for ScanTailor.

Hey all. I have a scanning or Document digitization service, Ever since my pc died, it has been storage. It has been so for more than 2 years. Is it safe to plug it into the wall outlet? So basically, if I plug it in, will it go bang and just completely explode?

Why should it? Maybe it won't work at all, but there's no danger in trying.
