How to associate file types?

Postby pstein » Thu Apr 20, 2017 2:41 pm

When I go to menu

options--->System

then there is a button "Associate file types"

When I click on it then nothing happens (on 64bit Win 7).

I expected a dialog prompt where I can select WHICH extensions should be associated with TextMaker.
But no popup dialog.

How do I restrict e.g. TextMaker to *.doc files (only)?

You should see a button in the taskbar start flashing. Clicking on it brings up the Windows dialog for associating files.

This dialog does not come into the foreground because of Windows behavior. Same in other programs, such as Microsoft Office. I am still scratching my head why they haven't fixed this yet.

You mean the TaskBar in Softmaker Free or TaskBar in Windows 7?

Anyway in none of the two places something is flashing.

I tried it a couple of times.

Can you verify this?

I work with Windows 10 64 bit but it should be the same here:
1. Invoke Tools=>Options=>System in TextMaker
2. Click on the "Associate file types..." button
=>In the Windows task bar you should see the icon for the file association dialog flashing.

I attached a screenshot.

No such flashing here (64bit Win7).

I am running Softmaker 2016 rev.763.1202 from USB flash drive

Is there another way of association (e.g. from cmdline)?

I'm running Windows 10 too. When I click the "Associate file types" button, there is no flashing, but the file type association dialogue opens immediately. Does nothing happen at all when you click the button?

As an afterthought: You are writing that you are running SMO from an USB stick. A portable installation is supposed to change nothing at all on the host system. Could this be the reason?

The portable version may not associate files. You should do that only with a regular install.

Thats pity.

I often use Softmaker from USB flash drive and would like to temporarily associate different software to *.doc files.

Why not offering a dynamic file association for portable SM installations as well?

Alternatively: How would a file association in Registry for Softmaker look like?

Maybe you could provide a *.reg script for it
