your upgrade script: add_apt_repo.sh

Post by sinistra » Thu Feb 01, 2018 6:54 pm

hi, just downloaded your upgrade script and continually receive a permissions denied message on running as su # anywhere I put it.

I placed the script in my $PATH (in this case, /usr/local/sbin/ as there was nothing else in there)
but continue to receive the 'permission denied' error message

./ is no good and $PATH is no good for me

should this script go somewhere else?

oh yes, and thanks for the X64 Deb for Linux Office, a long wait but glad to see it at last

Debian Sid

Linux 4.14.0-3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.14.13-1 (2018-01-14) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hi sinistra

Have you made the script executable? You can do this from the command line by typing:

chmod u+x add_apt_repo.sh

in the same directory where the script is, or add the path to the file before add_apt_repo.sh, ie: chmod u+x /usr/local/sbin/add_apt_repo.sh

After doing the chmod command you can type add_apt_repo.sh and the script will run, provide the file is in your $PATH. If the file is not in your $PATH, then you use the ./add_apt_repo.sh when you are in the same directory as the file.

I believe this script require administrator permissions, so you will need to add "sudo" before the filename: sudo ./add_apt_repo.sh

Hope this helps!

Terms:
./ means looking in the current directory
chmod = used to change the permissions of files or directories
chmod u+x = change permission for the owner of the file to executable
sudo = run the command as root (system administrator)

Yes, you need to make the script executable.

This is only necessary because you downloaded the script. There is no way to transfer such a flag via a download.

The script in the installation archives of the final version is of course executable by default.
