Can't type any accented char in french

Post by Kevlar » Sat May 06, 2017 12:21 pm

Hello, it's my first post, but I'm an hold user of Softmaker (since 2005 and Windows CE version :D ).
But, for the first time, I can't solve myself a very important problem : it's impossible, under Softmaker 2016 (registered version) to type any char with circonflex accent (^) or dieresis (like ö ). This accents are very, very often used in french, so in fact I can't use Textmaker for my work !
Some examples. A word like 'tête' (head un french), or 'même' (you can't write a paragraph without 'même' in french :o ) and so on ...
If I type the sequence ^e I should obtain ê, but under Textmaker, I only obtain '^e'.
I saw a topic with a Czech user, applyed yours advice (add EXport = language and so on ) but nothing changes.
My Linux version = Slitaz Cooking 5.0
Of course, all other apps I've tryed works fine with accents ... (gnumeric, Leafpad, Terminal)
Please note also that Softmaker don't recognize the "compose key" like other apps (I've tryed to use the compose key, in order to by-pass the Softmaker's bug : it works fine for other Lnux Apps, not for Softmaker)
I'll appreciate your help !

Loved the CE version! It was like nothing that existed so far for that platform :)

I can make circumflex accents without any problems with TextMaker 2016 Pro on Linux Mint 17.1 Mate. I use the french canadian keyboard.

No reply/solution from developers?
I have exactly the same problem although not that serious since we don't use accents that often in my language (Swedish). And the tréma (") doesn't show up at all.
No problems with accents in OpenOffice or plain text editors or browsers.
I know that the same issue has affected earlier SM versions and having been fixed but apparently it has returned?

Update to previous post:

I found the topic regarding the Czech user mentioned by Kevlar. Indeed, starting TM with

Code: Select all

export LANG=sv_SE
textmaker16
got the accents working properly. However, then all files/folders containing locale letter such as ä and ö no longer shows up correctly when opening/saving files (ö replaced with ö and so on). If I save a file with such letters in the file name it appears in my file manager with symbols isntead of letters and the warning "invalid encoding"
No other programmes are affected by running export LANG=sv_SE command. So there seems to be something odd with TM.

As long as you do not start your file manager from the same prompt, where you just set the locale, you cannot ensure that it uses the same locale setting. What you show above concerns only textmaker and only the one session that you just started.

While I would not insist, that nothing were odd with TextMaker, your observations, so far, only concern your file manager and maybe other system programs and system settings. Unfortunately, I am not at home at my own computer and cannot test or verify what may cause the effect that you describe, but for the time being, TextMaker is innocent. [-X

@Michael Uplawski:

It's not my file manager that is affected. It is Softmaker's menus/windows for opening/saving files that cannot display the Swedish letters å, ä, ö if I start the program after first giving the export LANG=sv_SE command. It is thus within Softmaker the problem appears.

If all my other programs can handle accents, and if Softmaker only can do so after the export LANG=sv_SE command (which in turn corrupts other functions), I find it difficult to reach the conclusion that Softmaker is innocent. And the "shame on you" smiley you sent me was definitely out of place.

There is a chance that I do not get the topic at all.
Cheerio.
