Issues, found after few days of work with TextMaker

Postby Wakizashi » Wed Oct 21, 2015 9:48 pm

Hello,

I have to work with lot of documents in OpenOffice format (Open Document format, latest is 1.2 - ISO/IEC 26300-1:2015)
Have found that Softmaker Office working more stable that OpenOffice/LibreOffice, and have no (not many ;) issues with MS Word compatibility.
So, own 2012 version for Linux. For eventual use with .DOC documents - it's Ok.

But now needed to work with large amount of ODTs... And completely disappointed...
For commercial product, pretending to be full featured Office suite for Linux, ODF support is miserable. Both in 2012, and 2016 versions.

Problems:
1. Not saving styles when working with ODT. Create modifications for, say, "Heading 1" and "Heading 2" to show hierarchical numbers on the titles.
Save, close Text Maker, and load again. Style changes are lost.

2. 2016 version is not reading document in ODT (even after TextMaker 2012), correctly. Styles are broken, offsets shifted, manually selected styles for specific words could affect whole paragraph, etc. Generally - complete mess.

3. Saved document is not compatible (rendered incorrectly) neither with 2 versions of LibreOffice (4.4.5 and 5.0.2) nor with OpenOffice (current is 4.1.1 - staled for almost 2 years for now...)

Other (not OpenDocument format related) issues:

4. 2016 version crashing on saving some documents - both ODT and DOCX.

5. Styles with Russian language are shown in "ballons" at the style management dialog as "Chinese (PRC)". Kind of joke? :)

6. Some styles, not used in document, can't be deleted. Example - "Date". Choosing "Delete" from menu, but it persists.

7. Some style names on preview are not visible at the styles column in the right (with "preview" checkbox is checked). Example - "Document Map".

8. Crapy screen rendering. Just open any dialog(for example - "options", and move it around the screen with TextMaker (better maximized). You will see :) If there are windows with "always on top" property, it's even relevant to dialog itself. Or if you are switching with Alt-Tab - dialog will be filled with content of previous window.
I know, that GUI rendering in X11 is different with MS Windows, but if this is version for Linux, it should work correctly with X11/X.Org :)

9. Really showstopper... Working with styles both in 2012 and in 2016 are buggy. For example: Set numbering for "Header 1", assign style "Numbered List", level 1.
On next text line with "Header 1" numbering again starts with 1, instead of continuing from 2. (At least, in TextMaker 2012 this is working correctly with same document).
But: save document with changed styles, close TextMaker, open it(document) again. Style changes are LOST.
This is MOST annoying issue, almost blocking any possibility to work with TextMaker as a text processor...

There was some other minor issues, but ones, mentioned above, are most annoying.

And that would be great to have functions to:
a) Select all text with specific style(paragraph or character);
b) Purge unused styles from the document. Style management dialog not very useful for it. That should be just "one click action".
c) Implement page styles, like in OO/LO/Word. That is a VERY useful feature, especially if you need to have different page decorations in the document. For example - two different title pages (Maybe I just has not found it?)

PS: System is Ubuntu MATE LTS (14.04) on System76 Galago Pro laptop (One of vendors, shipping HW with Ubuntu full support).
No any other apps have such problems with rendering, for example.

Regards,
Alexander

Please don't mix up too many different problems in one thread. You can open a new thread for every single problem you encounter. Could you please send us sample files (maybe in .doc or .tmd file format) to let us reproduce the issues with the .odt imort and export filter in TextMaker for Linux? Thank you!

Do you have normal bug-tracking system?
Something like Jira, Redmine, or TRACK?
It's not normal to submit bugs in forum, like using spoon to drive nails...

Yes, we have an internal bug tracker and it is our (Jim and my) job to read all bug reports, test if we can reproduce it or not and then (if necessary) open bug reports or feature requests in our internal bug tracker to inform the developer because the developers really don't have the time to read the forum all day.
But if our customers write novels and mix up totally different problems and (maybe) feature wishes all together in one very long post, it makes our work not easier. Instead it increases the chance that we overlook something or just do not understand what the customers exactly want. Also it takes much more time to sort it out.

So please do us all a favor and report only one bug or feature wish per thread. Thank you for your help and understanding! :D
