How do I carry out a sequence of commands with one key-combination?

Post by ecbritz » Wed Jul 19, 2017 1:47 pm

I asked this question some time ago but did not get an answer I could use. I can't use Tools > Changes as far as I can see. How exactly would I be able to carry out a pre-determined sequence of commands instantly, using Tools > Changes?

Let me give a simple example. Suppose I want to change the appearance of a selected sentence by applying Format > Character > Typeface: Cambria > > Size:14 pt > Styles: All Caps. And suppose I want to press Ctrl-J to do this, every time I need to. How do I achieve this? Alternatively, how could I do the same thing instantly, using Tools > Changes?

Tools > Changes has nothing to do with sequences of commands, it's for change tracking.

You should look at character styles.

Please explain to me how I can set up a key-combination, e.g. Ctrl-k, or do something else as quick and simple as pressing Ctrl-k, to perform the sequence of commands I gave as an example. It would save me weeks of time in the next few months, and I would really appreciate your trouble very much.

You can assign keys to character styles. Please read the chapter in the manual about character styles.

Ok, thanks a lot. I have the matter under control now.

If you could guide me to the solution of my other question, posted under "How do I start numbering with a number other than 1?" I would also be most grateful because I have a huge job and need the answer.

I managed to assign a key combination applying a certain character style, but it did not stick so I could use it again when I opened a new document, in a new Textmaker session. Is there a way to retain the function created even if the computer is shut down and restarted?

You make the style definition (including the key assignment) in a document template and base future documents on this template. The documents inherit the character style and the key binding.

Thanks! That makes sense.
