Here's what I have tried today:

Uninstall SMO2016, from the Windows 'This PC' 'Uninstall or change a program' list.

Power down.

Hold the power button for 20 seconds.

Take out the battery.

Press the power button
(with the intention of clearing all electrical energy from the laptop;)
(to my surprise, the laptop started to boot; must have two batteries).

Let it reboot.

Reinstall SMO2016
Install file :
- downloaded 03/12/16
- file size 350,011,224 bytes

Try to run it.
It failed

Install patch ofw16_763
- downloaded 10/02/17
- file size 45,412,144 bytes

Try to run it.
It failed

Install ofw16_hotfix_8691
- downloaded 13/02/17
- file size 53,721,728 bytes

Try to run it.
It failed

Install patch ofw16_765
- downloaded 14/03/17
- file size 45,403,360 bytes

Try to run TMexe.
- file size 45,403,360 bytes
It failed

QUESTION:
Can I be sure that uninstalling is removing all traces?
Is there anything else I can try?

ALL OTHER software I have installed on my laptop works normally.
This includes SM2012.
I do so wish I could make SM2016 run. It's now nearly three months since it last worked.

John,

our developers looked at the crashreports.

The crashes happen because the SoftMaker brushes are not properly created, the other two crash due to some memory corruption.

We are rather sure that the problem is not on TextMaker's side. Pleas check the GDI object count in the task manager, maybe you can find a process with some huge value there.

Thank you!

GDI object count looks normal.
See attached list, sorted starting from highest gdi count.
GDI obj. list.jpg

Also, the fact that EVERYTHING else on my laptop runs flawlessly does surely not support your hypothesis that the host laptop has some improper settings causing conflict with the application software. Not a single other program misbehaves. I am not blaming TextMaker.exe, which I think is excellent application software, but I think the evidence points fairly strongly to no laptop fault here, don't you?

Could the SSD be a factor?

Sven, I did check the GDI object count, as you advised. Did you think the figures I posted looked abnormal?

It's a great disappointment that TM still won't start after 4 months, which means I have no option but to keep using Word, with its ghastly-GUI. I am really hoping you haven't given up on me, because I've run and reported back on every test you asked me to try, including the last GDI count test.

And I have a great many applications of many different kinds, all running with not a single problem with any of them.
I would not say this if I had anything else that malfunctioned - I would see it as a clue, and tell you about it. But everything else just works normally. So, what, oh what, have I done wrong here?

I received another Windows update yesterday. In the morning, I'll try TM again, to see if the update made any difference.

That's quite an amount of tasks you are running. Maybe one of the tasks locks TextMaker.

In this case, you could close task by task, and test if Office 2016 starts.

But before disabling McAfee, you should disconnect from the internet / WLAN and other networks.

Sven,

I've tried twice to send you a Private Message. The message header seems to say it has been sent, but the message still sits immovably in my 'Outbox', and the most recent message in my 'Sent box' is much older. To be on the safe side, here's a transcript. Please forgive me if you have in fact received it. Whilst it remains only in my 'Outbox' and not in my 'Sent box', I just be sure from the 'Sent' time, whether you really received it or not:

Dear Sven,

Thank you very much for trying hard yesterday afternoon to get TM2016 to work on my laptop.
After you disconnected, I tried an experiment to see if I could obtain any more small clues about the cause of the problem. I tried to run TM with various 'compatibility' settings. Everything I tried failed, except for one of the tests, which also failed but not straight away.

I'll describe every detail of the partially-successful test, so your developers can see about how far through the code TM was able to run, with the partially successful test.

When I set BOTH of these :
- Properties>compatibility = "Run in compatibility mode for Windows 7",
- Run this program as an Administrator,

then with these settings only (nothing else worked), TM2016 worked partially, as follows:
(1) The TM window opened, with:
- 'Textmaker' in the title bar,
- A red 'T' icon in the top left corner,
- Close, shrink and enlarge gadgets in the top rigt corner,
- Menu headings, 'File' and 'Help'.
(2) The registration popup appeared immediately (preventing ne from testing the menus)
This appeared because I have repeatedly uninstalled and re-installed SM2016.

When I entered the resgistration number, TM immediately crashed.

I hope this will help the developers.

Yours sincerely,
John
