Function Named Ranges

Postby XL-Dennis » Wed Mar 11, 2015 3:54 pm

In the Insert Function Dialog there is a group called Named Ranges. However, the list of functions is empty (see attached screen shot). What's the intention for this group?

The 'Function' list is really a list of names, i.e. the names of the ranges that you want to work with.

  1. Select a range of cells (e.g. containing temperature data).
  2. Click in the box where the current cell is displayed (in the top left-hand corner of the worksheet).
  3. Type in a name for the selected range (e.g. Temperature) and press the Enter key.

When you visit the Insert Function dialog and choose the 'Named ranges' category, you'll see 'Temperature' in the Function list. You can now use that name to refer to the range of cells, so instead of a formula like '=Average(A1:A31)' you can use the more readable '=Average(Temperature)'.
