Why two separate Reply-To?

Post by Kea » Sat Oct 06, 2012 2:40 pm

I administrate two very simple mailing lists, mainly for computer support. I've been using Barca Pro, and that was never a problem. Now I've moved to eM Client, and I got a very unexpected and irritating issue.

Some of the lines from the header in eM Client:

Return-Path: <the_list_address-return@my_domain>
Delivered-To: karin@my_domain
Reply-To: the_list_address@my_domain
Reply-To: Karin <karin@my_domain>
User-Agent: eM_Client/4.0.14690.0

The same from Barca Pro:

Return-Path: <the_list_address-return@my_domain>
Delivered-To: karin@my_domain
Reply-To: the_list_address@my_domain
X-Mailer: Barca Pro 2.8 (4400) - Licensed Version

As you can see, eM Client creates an extra "Reply-To", as it adds my account address as a separate "Reply-To". This is not the case in Barca Pro. That - in eM Client - is causing a problem. The mail to the list arrives with two To-adresses, like:

the_list_address@my_domain, "Karin" <karin@my_domain>

If the recipient answer the mail, without checking the address (which they isn't), it results in one of three things:

1. The answer goes to the_list_address@my_domain only, which is the correct alternative.
2. The answer goes only to Karin <karin@my_domain>, and the other members on the list won't see it.
3. The answer goes to both the_list_address@my_domain and karin@my_domain. I get two mails and that is irritating. If I delete the wrong one and then try to answer the other, chances is that the answer only goes to the sender, not to the list!

Why is eM Client adding that extra Reply-To? How can I persuade it not to?

If I can't, then I have to go back to Barca Pro, at least when writing to the lists.

Here is a answer from the developers of the eM Client regarding your inquiry:

The second Reply-to header highly probably wasn't filled by eM Client,
but a mail server that handles the mailing list.
This is quite normal behavior for server to alter Reply-to
header, but the odd think is that the server does not remove the
original one.
The reason why it does work with Barca is probably because
Barca does not fill any reply-to header at all.
You can check the original message header in your
sent folder (right click on the message
in your sent folder and select View Message Header),
that is the way how the message was sent to mail server.

Yes, I know that the mail server adds a reply-to, as it is nessesary.

But the feature "does not fill any reply-to header at all" is by no means something uniquely for Barca. My mailing list has been around since 1998(!!!), on the same server, and Barca is absolutely not the only mail client I've been using: Outlook Express, Outlook, Pocomail, Barca Pro, Sylpheed, Dreammail, Eudora, Mozilla Thunderbird, Courier, Ultrafunk Popcorn, Pegasus for example.

And now eM Client - the only client that fills in a reply-to in the header. Why? There is no need for it, but it makes a nuisance if you use it to send mail to a mailing list.

Some mail clients gives you the opportunity to add a "reply-to" (if you send the mail from one address but want the answer to another), but eM Client doesn't have that feature and you can't even choose to remove the reply-to.

As for now I'm using eM Client for all "normal" mailing, but Sylpheed for the mailing list - a bit of an awkward situation!

I referred your comment to the eM Client developers.
