'docx' file association

Post by cwatkins » Tue Nov 08, 2011 3:23 pm

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and have installed Textmaker 2010 (rev 596)
Everything works fine (except for a previously reported formatting issue with 'docx' files)

When I select a '.doc' file in Ubuntu, TextMaker opens and loads the file in the normal way.
However, I when I click on a '.docx' file, Ubuntu actually loads a completely different application.

I have used the right button - 'Open with' - 'Other applications' to change the file association, but Textmaker is not in the list of installed applications, so I cannot associate 'docx' files with TextMaker.

How can I make Textmaker appear in the list of installed applications so that I can complete the file association?

You should have the option to enter a different command instead of using any of the applications offered.
Here, you just need to enter "textmaker".

I have the same issue, in going into the open with menu and trying to find textmaker or planmaker, they are not listed. There is also no option in ubuntu 11.10 to manually point to a command (or other program). I am sure there is some way to do this with config files but I am not advanced enough to know which ones.

Newest Ubuntu doesn't have that custom command option so the links don't help. Isn't this something that can be fixed by the SoftMaker team?

Still waiting for an update to this. :)

When I right click a file and chose to open with another program and go to the list to chose one. Textmaker and planmaker are not in the list with all the other apps I have installed, but they are actually installed. Something isn't registering right with Ubuntu.

This is the answer http://askubuntu.com/questions/67382/ad ... ith-dialog

Cp the file as described then edit your new file to have the name "Textmaker" or "Planmaker" whatever the case may be and then change the line

Exec=whatever %U

to

Exec=/usr/bin/textmaker %U

save it and then you will see the program in the open with additional list and be able to associate. :)
