Windows CE x86 compatibility

Postby vrf » Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:29 pm

Hello there,

Thanks for such a great product. Now that my MobilePro has given up the ghost, I'm looking at some of those new netbooks like the Eee PC, IdeaPad S9 or HP Mini 1000. They all run XP, though.... No instant-on. :( Question: if I could put together a WinCE 6 image for my netbook, would Textmaker 2008 run on the x86 processor? (Intel Atom.) All I need this for is the basics on the go, so the near instant-on is very important to me. (A shame that the battery life won't be as good...)

Thanks for your help!

Hello,

SoftMaker Office 2008 for WindowsCE needs a StrongARM processor and will not run on a device with a x86 processor.

In your case we suggest to use Linux on that EeePC and SoftMaker Office 2008 for Linux which would run properly on that device.

Thanks for the reply. I thought maybe that would be the case, but I had hope otherwise, since there on Softmaker's About page, it says that Softmaker Office 2008 is available on the followoing operating systems:

Windows XP, Vista, 2000

Linux (x86, ARM, others)

Windows Mobile (Pocket PC)

Windows CE (ARM, MIPS, SH4, x86, others)

Qtopia 2.x and 4.x

But I guess that's a typo?

That's not a typo. The page you mentioned is for OEM customers who purchase thousands of licenses. For those, if they really need, we can custom-create an x86 Windows CE version.
