Troubleshooting: cursor won't highlight when I click and scroll

I have an unusual problem that I imagine is because I'm using an old laptop (Windows 8.1) When I click on a body of text and scroll for the purpose of copy/paste, changing the font, etc.; the text doesn't highlight. Interestingly enough, those features are still functional, but it won't highlight so...
